HBR: ‘Make Your Values Mean Something’
Source: HBR 7/’02 Patrick Lencioni
Understanding the four different types of values;
basic definitions so people know what they are talking about and what they are trying to accomplish.
1. Core Values
Deeply ingrained principles that guide all of a company’s actions; they serve as its cultural cornerstones,
core values are not made by consensus, they are imposed top down on the members of a company with
zero tolerance for interpretation.
2. Aspirational Values
Values a company needs to succeed in the future but currently lacks.
3. Permission-to-Play values
Simply reflect the minimum behavioral and social standards required of any employee.
4. Accidental Values
Arise spontaneously without being cultivated by leadership and take hold over time.
